The IIHS and How it Picks the Safest Vehicles

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or the IIHS, is an independent, non-profit organization that performs evaluations, researches and assesses the safety of production vehicles in crash testing. In order to qualify for a 2019 Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must earn good ratings in a variety of categories. They include head restraint tests, roof strengths, side, moderate overlap front, and the driver-side small overlap front. The vehicle must also earn an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test and headlight rating. Lastly, the vehicle must earn an advanced or superior rating in front crash prevention. 

The Eclipse Cross received good ratings in all six of the crash tests that it was put through. The SEL Eclipse Cross trim level earning IIHS top honors specifically when it features LED headlights, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. SEL trim levels take safety to another level with the available Touring Package which adds features like automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision mitigation. 

The Eclipse Cross

The 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a compact crossover SUV, makes room for up to five passengers and comes in a total of five trim levels. The lineup begins with the entry-level ES model, packed with features such as automatic climate control, LED daytime running lights, a four-speaker sound system, a rearview camera, heated side mirrors, fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a USB port, a 7-inch touchscreen and infotainment system, Bluetooth, and rear seats with 60/40 split-folding. The upper trim levels, the LE, SP, SE, and SEL, build upon the SE with features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, remote touchpad controller for the infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, SOS and emergency roadside assistance, six-speaker sound system, panoramic sunroof, a surround-view parking camera system, and automatic high beams.
